London cheaper than Moscow & Tokyo

London is not cheap, but according to an annual survey of over 140 cities comparing the prices of 200 items and services, the UK capital is less expensive than Moscow and Tokyo. The consultancy, Mercer, conducted based its survey on March, 2008.

The company used New York as its guide city, giving it a notional score of 100 points. Peter Stiff reported in The Times, on Thursday July 24, that "London had an index of 125 compared with 126.3 in 2007, with sterling relatively stable against the dollar."

According to the survey on average a cup of coffee complete with service cost, on average, £2.20 in London, whereas a coffee would set you back £5.19 in Moscow and £2.57 in Tokyo.

An international paper was less than half the price (£1.50) in the UK as it was in Moscow (£3.05).

Let's not kid ourselves, London ain't cheap either. Unsurprisingly, London was more expensive than Moscow and New York when the average price for renting out a luxury two bedroom unfurnished apartment was calculated. Tokyo came top of that particular pile.

Visitors to London have every right to expect value for money, too.
