Charity applies to knockdown St Paul's
The charity ActionAid has lodged an application with the City of London requesting that the iconic St Paul's Cathedral be demolished. The publicity seeking stunt is intended to draw attention to a British company's plans to mine bauxite from an Indian mountain.Brendan O'Donnell, a campaigner for the charity said: "Just as Londoners wouldn't tolerate the demolition of their Cathedral to make a quick buck, so the Kondh people won't allow their treasured mountain and forests to be destroyed."
The Niyamgiri mountain is a sacred site for the 8,000 strong Kondh tribe. St Paul's Cathedral is an icon of London.
The towering dome of St Paul's managed to survive the Blitz. St Paul’s dome, which dominates London’s skyline, is the only cathedral dome in England and is one of the largest in the world.

The acoustics at the top of the first 259 steps, 30 metres from the Cathedral’s floor, are so good that a whisper can be heard distinctly opposite; hence its name, the Whispering Gallery. Above this is the Stone Gallery which is 23 metres above and higher still, at 85 metres, is the Golden Gallery. Visitors with a head for heights can enjoy great views of London from the Golden Gallery.
